Citizen Alert Guyana publishes information. Nobody is dispatched from this site, and reporting something here does not summon help. If you are in danger or someone needs help now, call the emergency services directly.

During flooding

• Do not walk or drive through moving water — as little as 15 cm can knock you off your feet.
• Flood water in built-up areas is contaminated; wash thoroughly after any contact.
• Switch off electricity at the main if water is entering your home, if you can do so safely.
• Move important documents, medicine and valuables to a high shelf before water rises.

On the road

• Check the live map before travelling in heavy rain — road closures appear there first.
• Keep well back from flooded sections; the road surface underneath may be washed away.
• If you come upon a crash, do not crowd the scene — call it in and keep the lane clear.

Fire

• Get everyone out first; do not go back inside for belongings.
• Close doors behind you as you leave — it slows the fire down measurably.
• Call 912 from outside the building, not from inside it.

Reporting something safely

• Never put yourself in danger to gather information or take photographs.
• Do not photograph or name people involved in an incident.
• Report what you saw, not what you assume happened — an operator reviews every report.
