Privacy

Written to be read, not to be survived. This describes what Citizen Alert Guyana actually stores, why, and for how long, in line with Guyana’s Data Protection Act 2023.

You do not need an account

Reading the map, the feed and every incident page requires no account, no sign-in and no email address. We do not build a profile of you.

If you turn on area alerts

We store: a rounded location, how far around it you want to be alerted, which categories you chose, a minimum severity, and the anonymous push address your browser generates. Your location is rounded to a 250-metre grid before it is saved, so we hold an area, not an address. There is no page or endpoint that reads those settings back — your browser keeps the only copy. Turning alerts off deletes the record.

If you send us a report

We store what you submit, the location you chose, and a one-way fingerprint of your network address used only to stop abuse. A phone number is optional and used only if an operator needs to check a detail. Reports that are rejected — along with any phone number — are deleted within 30 days. If you choose to report anonymously, your identifiers are removed once review finishes.

What we never publish

Names, faces, licence plates and exact addresses of people involved in incidents. Public-safety incidents show an approximate area only. Photographs are reviewed one by one and are not published if a person is identifiable.

How long we keep things

Rejected reports: up to 30 days. Records of which alerts were delivered: 90 days. Unpublished photographs: 30 days. The abuse-prevention fingerprint is re-keyed weekly, so reports cannot be linked together over time.

Your rights

You can ask what we hold about you, ask for it to be corrected, or ask us to delete it. You can remove your own alert subscription at any time from the alerts page. To ask about anything else, or to request that something published be corrected or taken down, use the contact route on this site.

Analytics

We use privacy-friendly, cookie-free analytics that count page visits without identifying visitors. There are no advertising trackers on this site.
